Compassion trip to Haiti

I had the most incredible opportunity to visit Haiti in December 2011. It was life-changing.
I went with Compassion UK and Spring Harvest to visit child sponsorship schemes and see where more could be done with investment from the UK. Nine of us went, with the aim of making some short films to encourage people to give and to sponsor children. I have never seen poverty or need on such a scale, it was heartbreaking. There is 80% unemployment, and those 80% live on less than two dollars a day. More than 50% of them live in abject poverty – less than a dollar a day. And yet the people were warm, friendly, generous and so full of hope and determination to change their country for the better. I was humbled. And I was so impressed by the local churches who are stepping up to the plate and providing for the need in their communities to the best of their ability, 24 hours a day, in every way they can. The Compassion Haiti office is supporting them with such passion and dedication that it made me tearful on a daily basis.
I saw it first-hand – child sponsorship REALLY WORKS. I now sponsor a little girl called Emmanuella and I know it’s going to change her life. Visit www.compassionuk.org to do the same. And if you come to Spring Harvest 2012 you’ll see the films we made there.
Creativity in Church
I was interviewed by Carole Rawley from New Life Church in Cambridge. I was there for their Girl Talk 2011 conference, where, incidentally, it was a great honour to meet and listen to Baroness Cox. She was SO inspiring, speaking up for the oppressed. She encouraged us that although we cannot do everything, we cannot do nothing. Wise words.

It was great to be asked questions about how creatives can be valued in church…
The Word of the Wives latest
The Word of the Wives is my first book. It’s a collection of twenty-six monologues that tell the stories of the great men of the Bible, from the point of view of the women who had to put up with them. It’s an amusing, moving, arresting, irreverent, charming and alarmingly frank collection for reading, performing, giving, pondering or whatever.
So far it has sold about 3000 copies and we’re into a second edition. Sadly this doesn’t mean I’m making any money out of it yet! But then that’s not why I wrote it. It’s not some kind of feminist drive either. In fact I just love Bible stories and wanted to find a new way to tell them. And this seems to be working.
Jeff Lucas says: “With words that sparkle and rare insight, this terrific book will nudge audiences to laugh, cry and, most of all, understand. More than a mere resource, it’s a gift. Don’t miss it.” What a nice man.
You can buy it from Christian bookshops (please support them), or buy it from Amazon (there are a couple of nice reviews there, feel free to add another one). Alternatively you can come and see me performing a show and buy it from me in person.
I perform eight of the pieces as a one-woman show and the audiences seem to be enjoying it and discovering a new way to connect with some of the people in the Bible. The diary page on this website can tell you all the dates coming up. Or why not book a performance in your own home town? Contact me via the contact page.
Thanks to those of you who have been asking about a CD or DVD – they are both in the pipeline, but taking a while to emerge! You’ll hear it here when they’re available.

In addition, my friends at Youthwork the Conference 2010 cheekily sneaked a camera into my show and taped Mrs Potiphar. So here she is:
Spring Harvest 2012
I work full time for Spring Harvest as their head of creative arts. One of the many things I love about my job, is the chance to play with various methods of communicating the theme for the year. The theme in 2012 is Church Actually; God’s brilliant idea. It’s been really encouraging thinking about all the good things the global church can and does achieve and what our potential is. I made this little video to help us start the conversation.
I would definitely recommend you check out the Spring Harvest website and think about booking in for the Easterholidays in 2012, it’s going to be great. I’ll be there with bells on.
